Why Rotate Injection Sites?

Rotating injection sites prevents lipodystrophy—a condition that can reduce medication absorption and create unsightly lumps or depressions at injection sites.

Prevent Lipodystrophy

Repeated injections in the same spot can cause fatty lumps (lipohypertrophy) or depressions (lipoatrophy) that reduce medication absorption and create visible changes in skin texture.

Optimal Absorption

Different injection sites have varying absorption rates. Rotating ensures consistent medication delivery and helps you find the sites that work best for your body.

Simple Rotation

For weekly GLP-1 users, alternating left and right sides each week is usually sufficient. This provides 52 different injection spots per year—more than enough to prevent issues.

Reduce Discomfort

Rotating sites prevents localized irritation and soreness. If one area becomes sensitive, you can easily switch to another approved injection site.

Best Injection Sites for GLP-1 Medications

Abdomen

Best absorption rate. Stay at least 2 inches away from your navel. Rotate around the belly button in a circle pattern. Most users find this the easiest site for self-injection.

Thighs

Front or outer thigh only. Some users report reduced nausea when injecting in the thigh compared to the abdomen. Avoid the inner thigh area.

Upper Buttocks

Upper outer quadrant. This area may be harder to reach for self-injection, so you may need a partner's help. Good option if you experience sensitivity in other areas.

Upper Arms

Back of arm only. Typically requires partner assistance. The triceps area is the recommended location. Avoid the front of the arm.

Flanks (Love Handles)

Above the waistline on your sides. A good alternative site, especially during pregnancy or if other areas become sensitive. Easy to reach for self-injection.

Important: Always inject into subcutaneous (fatty) tissue, not muscle. Pinch the skin gently and inject at a 45-90 degree angle. Never inject into areas with scars, moles, or skin irritation.

Rotation Tips and Best Practices

Start Simple

For weekly GLP-1 users, simple left/right alternation is usually sufficient. You don't need complex tracking unless you inject multiple times daily.

Keep a Schedule

Use this tracker to create a 12-week schedule. Print it and keep it on your fridge or in your medication box for easy reference.

Mark Your Calendar

Set a weekly reminder on your phone for your injection day. Note which side you used so you remember to switch next week.

Inspect Before Injecting

Before each injection, check the site for any lumps, redness, or changes. If you notice anything unusual, skip that area and choose a different site.

When to Contact Your Healthcare Provider

  • • Persistent lumps or depressions at injection sites that don't improve
  • • Redness, swelling, or pain that lasts more than a few days
  • • Signs of infection (warmth, pus, fever)
  • • Noticeable changes in medication effectiveness
  • • Difficulty finding suitable injection sites
